Oven Survey

One key to understanding our ovens is to learn more about the diversity of our ovens.

For that purpose, I am creating a survey of our ovens to learn more about the ovens and how they are used.

I hope the following list of questions will help to characterize our ovens and help guide new oven builders to find an oven design that is right for their needs.

Survey Questions

These are the questions that have occurred to me so far. If you think of others that I ought to ask, please let me know.

  • When was oven construction started?
  • When was oven construction completed?
  • Who built the oven?
  • What kind of oven is it (brick, cob, prefabricated)?
  • Is it an indoor or outdoor oven?
  • Where did the oven design come from?
  • Who built it or supplied the prefabricated parts?
  • How big is it on the inside (height of interior, diameter if a hemisphere, rectangular size if barrel vault)?
  • Is it big enough on the inside to keep a fire going while baking pizza or flatbread?
  • How big is it on the outside (height of base, total height, area of footprint)?
  • Is the oven low mass or high mass?
  • How long does it take to heat up?
  • Once heated, how long does it stay hot enough to bake in?
  • How often do you use it?
  • What times of year do you use your oven?
